No man has the right to sexually assault a woman. That's not up for debate or question. What chaps my hide is that we women are being silent about being hurt. I'm not talking about being hurt due to a break up or being hurt by someones careless words, I'm talking about someone physically hurting and degrading us in the worst way possible. Taking away our dignity, self-esteem, and safety and we remain silent. There is a saying that says, tell the truth and shame the devil. When we are assaulted or know that someone has been hurt and we remain silent then we are just as guilty as the person who did the hurt. By not speaking up we give license to the person that hurt us to hurt others. This is not okay! I am asking us to STOP being silent about our pain and to use our voices, time, money, and influence to get justice. To get peace. To get healing.
I do not want to see another # movement. I do not want to hear about a woman being assaulted 10 years ago and just now finding the support to finally speak out. I do not want another woman to be afraid to come forward, to be silent in her pain. If we are truly about loving and supporting each other as a community, as a tribe of dope as women then we cannot be silent. Here is what we must do:
1. We must show support, empathy and compassion towards women who have been assaulted.
2. We must get the truth, the whole truth.
3. We must demand justice.
4. We must not play the blame the victim game. You know things like; She wouldn't have been assaulted if she would have had on jeans. She was flirting with him so she must have wanted it and all of the other stupid bullshit you hear.
If you know someone or have been a victim of sexual assault do not be silent. Please call your local authorities or the national sexual assault hotline at 800.656.HOPE (4673). I pray that this post helps someone break their silence.
Until next time, be BLESSED and FABULOUS!
