Here's the thing, giving up soda is hard. The first time I did it was a challenge to see if I could and if I would feel better health wise. Instead of Coke I drank green tea, juice and water. I would have a ginger ale if my stomach was upset but other than that no soda. IT SUCKED for about two weeks, the headaches were the worst. When your body is used to having caffeine and you take it away oh your body will let you know how displeased it is. Next came the cravings. I could literally taste soda and it would take everything in me not to breakdown and buy one. If I heard someone crack open a can I would crave a soda. Eating certain foods made me want a soda. Let's be honest who orders a cheeseburger, french fries and a sweet tea? Everyone knows that cheeseburgers, french fries and coke go together. It's a fact! Getting past the cravings was the hard part about giving up soda. I had to find another substitute so I would eat cookies or peanut butter crackers. I would eat things that would make me want to drink water. So, the upside was that I drank more water.
I know what you want to know and the answer is yes. Did I feel better health wise? Sure, after the headaches and being a little bitchy I did feel better. The most improvement I could see was that my face didn't break out as much. My skin felt softer (it could be the magic body oil that I use but we'll chalk some of it up to water). Did I have an extra pep in my step? No. Did I lose some weight? I did lose about 2 pounds but due to all the cookie eating I gained it right back.
So fast forward to this year's challenge and I am a week away from meeting the goal of no soda for lent. Was it easier this time? Heck no. Am I going to continue it? Yes, because I want to see how long I can go without it or maybe I just like to torture myself. Will I let my sorority sister talk me into another lent challenge? Probably. What did I learn from this? 1. Don't answer phone calls from Rochelle. 2. If you truly put your mind to something you can achieve it. 3. Soda really is bad for you if you consume too much of it. How much is too much? Are you currently reading this and reaching for your 2nd soda of the day? You might need to cut back. Seriously, soda has a lot of sugar and long term that is not good for our bodies. Remember everything in MODERATION. Next year I'm giving up something interesting like paying bills! What did you give up for lent?
Until next time be BLESSED and FABULOUS!
